ATTACHMENT – QUOTES

“So often it is only when people suddenly feel they are losing their partner that they realize how much they love them. Then they cling on even tighter. But the more they grasp, the more the other person escapes them, and the more fragile the relationship becomes.

So often we want happiness, but the very way we pursue it is so clumsy and unskillful that it brings only more sorrow. Usually we assume we must grasp in order to have that something that will ensure our happiness. We ask ourselves: ‘How can we possibly enjoy anything if we cannot own it?’ How often attachment is mistaken for love!

Even when the relationship is a good one, love can be spoiled by attachment with its insecurity, possessiveness, and pride; and then when love is gone, all you have left to show for it are the ‘souvenirs’ of love, the scars of attachment.” ~ Sogyal Rinpoche
“Don’t be attached to the things of the world, and don’t be attached to the things of the other world, because things are things. It makes no difference whether they are of this world or the other world — attachment is the problem.” ~ Osho

“There are different types of attachment in relation to different objects: attachment toward form, appearance, sound, smell, tactile sensations, and so on.  All of these individually are powerful enough to cause a lot of problems and difficulties. However, the strongest form of attachment seems to be sexual attachment.  Here we find attachment toward all the five senses involved. Therefore, it is all the more powerful and has the potential for problems and destruction.” ~ Dalai Lama

“All of our miseries are nothing but attachment. Our whole ignorance and darkness is a strange combination of a thousand and one attachments. And we are attached to things which will be taken away by the time of death, or even perhaps before. You may be very much attached to money but you can go bankrupt tomorrow. You may be very much attached to your power and position, your presidency, your prime ministership, but they are like soap bubbles. Today they are here, tomorrow not even a trace will be left.” ~ Osho

“By letting it go, it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try the world is beyond the winning.” ~ Lao-Tzu
