Not sure what to make of this. If we lie against others and they are hurt by such lies, then we ought to be punished for destructive lies.

My understanding is that we are the ones that hurt the most when we lie to ourselves. Meaning, it’s not about anyone else. It is us who get affected the most. It is us who suffer. Moral of this quote: don’t lie to yourself. Confront yourself with the truth even if it’s difficult.
